Stormy

The storm which was hurricane Bertha rattled up the channel last night and this morning with high winds, lots of rain and the odd bit of lighting thrown in.

Jim went down to the boats today and texted me everything was ok.

I was at the boat yesterday and working out some modifications I want to do to the rigging. There's a boat jumble at Fort Purbrook next Sunday (the 17th). I'll hopefully be picking a few bits to help.

It seems strange as that was the boat jumble I bought the chain for Sprite's mooring last year.

The past 12 months have been involved in getting Sprite II to sail again and fix and replace the bits that needed fixing and replacing.

The next 12 months should be involved in doing the actual act of sailing and changes to Sprite to help it sail better and help me sail it more easily.

  1. Glad to hear things are OK with Sprite II. The weather up here in the North East is quite mad at the moment. What mods on the rigging are you going to do? Nice to see another sailor doing up a boat on a budget!

  2. I saw the weather forecasts. We got the back end of Bertha at the weekend so its got to you now then?

Yes I have no other choice but to follow the philosophy of skintology. I don't have the funds to do anything else! But I do like the idea of doing exactly the same things that the guys in the yacht club or Marina are doing, but for a fraction of the price.

I'm looking at gearing up the kicker with a couple of double or triple blocks because at present I can't get enough tension in the main sail.

If I can find a couple of small fiddle blocks I may replace the down haul pulleys with them again to provide a bit of gearing.

It gives me a goal at the boat jumble rather than wandering round aimlessly. :-)

I take it you've got your own project on the go? What are you up to?

  3. Not up to anything today! Just got back from my boat and it's just too windy to go out. I have taken 2 days off work to get out sailing for the first time. Quite gutted actually. I have an old Halcyon 23 that I am slowly doing up.

  4. I have days like that, like last weekend. Until I get used to how Sprite handles the wind I'm keeping away from the really windy stuff. Hopefully the rigging changes will help. I can understand if you're ready to go and you can't try it out.
